The Sunshine When She’s Gone & Giveaway!

Fun FindThe Sunshine When She’s Gone by Thea Goodman is about the strength of marriage, its ability to bounce back, the deep love and sometimes inexplicable changes individuals and couples go through when they have a child.

I enjoyed reading this book a lot though at times the narcissism of the two characters put me on edge. Then again, I now have three kids and I still remember the struggle that occurred within me and within my marriage when that first baby came along.  The book is funny, sometimes surprising and a good telling on what sleep deprivation can do.  Goodman tells the story of a father taking his new baby, Claire, to a the Caribbean instead of the park, just to let his wife sleep from both people’s point of view.  Over a long weekend the two characters evolve, face the reality of parenting and struggle to maintain their relationship.  At times it was almost hard for me to read because I remember having some of the same feelings.

The Sunshine When She’s Gone is full of love and passion.  It is a sometimes hilarious book that touches on sacrifice in a true way.  It makes you wonder what you would do if  you stepped out of your own life.

Goodman was on npr recently and had this to say about her book and fumbling through marriage on Weekend Edition with Rachel Martin.
