Mistubishi Outlander Sport SE 2013 Review

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport SE model is the first Mitsubishi to be reviewed on MPR. To me, Mitsubishi has created many models that are outwardly masculine but there was no way to know if the same held true performance-wise or upon closer inspection with the interior.

Outside the Outlander Sport SE shows off a chrome front grille that has similarities to what Jaguar is creating and I liked it. The look comes off as slightly aggressive, sporty and as if it means business. In a line of parked SUV’s and crossovers this quality always stands out. There are fog lights and a rear spoiler and exhaust that finish that look. It is a shorter 5-passenger SUV/Crossover Outlander with 105.1 inch wheelbase. A 7-passenger is also available.



Inside the Outlander is simplicity in driving and looks. The dashboard contains the minimal amount of controls and buttons, as does the steering wheel. There is no confusion when you get in this car about what button or dial does what for the car. I appreciated that while driving it on a daily basis. That’s the point of the Outlander Sport. It is great for every day driving and getting you where you need to go with a side of mild off-roading thrown in for fun. The seats are heated in the front, which was a nice surprise. XM/Sirius radio is available. A rear camera system is available in some packages. This car has keyless entry and a push to start/stop engine switch. I will never stop loving that and the rain sensing wipers. The rear seats are 60/40 split fold down and there is more room in the back than I anticipated. It was comfortable to drive the Outlander and felt moderately roomy. By far the favorite feature on this car (premium package) is the panoramic glass roof with LED illumination. It made driving the SUV fun and freeing. It was a hit with every person that climbed into the vehicle.

As I said, the Outlander is a good crossover to get you where  you need to go with an estimated highway mpg of 29 and 24 in the city.  A 148-horse, 145-torque, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine works well with the vehicle’s CVT Sportronic automatic.  I’m not sure if this is a Mitsubishi trait or just a standalone issue with this model but each time I started the Outlander Sport it made a throat-clearing type of sound that was disconcerting.  Once the car got going the driving was fine both in town and on the highway.  Acceleration also threw me off. It was like a hiccup happened each time I hit the gas and the car would leap forward in a jarring way.  Aside from those two issues handling was fine.  It’s reliable and more nimble than I would initially presumed too. Steering is tight and the smaller size makes it easy to park.

Priced affordably at $19,170 (MSRP on Outlander Sport SE with premium package $28,570) the Outlander Sport has nice suspension, decent fuel economy and is a good small family SUV/crossover that works for a wide range of people and types of driving.  A revised 2014 series of Outlander’s will be debuting so it might be wise to check out what changes are coming and make a decision from there.  Find all the trim option and packages on the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport at the Mitsubishi website.
