Johnson’s Natural Baby Care

Five years ago when we decided to “go green” we knew it was going to have to be a gradual thing.  We used up cleaning products laden with chemicals instead of tossing them and we replaced them with green alternatives. We used reusable bags and figured out ways to recycle items beyond bottles and cans.  When it came to buying healthier products for my baby and ourselves it was a bit tougher.  The products I wanted and needed were not available at my local store and buying them was often costly.  I ended up making many things myself.

Neosporin Eczema Essentials

I tend to dread winter in my house more than usual the past few years.  It used to be just me that would get dry patches, itchy skin and red spots on my body.  Now all three of my kids do too.  On their cheeks, backs, stomachs, arms and even legs.  No spot of skin seems safe from the dreaded eczema (“the itch that rashes”).

I have tried so many things – lotions, creams, ointments, prescriptions with steroids, you name it and we have probably tried it.  A Mary Kay rep even gave me a sample of ointment once from her purse once while at the grocery store.  My kids red, raw cheeks looked that bad.  None of the products worked.  When Mom Central asked if I wanted to test out Neosporin Essentials Eczema kit I almost screamed ‘Yes!’ out loud. A nice email reply was sufficient.

The Neosporin Essentials trial pack included a body wash, daily lotion and an anti-itch cream.  The latter works really well on those chapped, red cheeks.  The kit claims that using the products will give you better results within in three days.  You know what? It totally does.  My youngest girl had dry spots on her thighs and back.  Bathing her in the thick (must rinse a lot) body wash begins the soothing process while the daily cream goes on smooth and protects the skin.  I like how none of the products are greasy and they don’t seem to wear off.  They absorb well into the skin and don’t contain any steroids. Containing lipid, humectant, emollient and botanical blend you can use it on the whole family. It also received Seal of Acceptance from the National Eczema Association.   The anti-itch cream has done wonders for my oldest daughter and myself.  My eczema acts up in my ears.  I put that stuff on after my shower and I’m good for the rest of the day and a few days after that.  The same goes for her legs which get so dry and scaly she is constantly scratching them.  The combination of all three products from the trial pack eased the symptoms on all the kids in just one day and after three the eczema had resided or gone away.

I was really pleased with Neosporin Essentials. It worked well, didn’t irritate or carry a heavy fragrance.  Combined the products work magic on our wintry, eczema riddled skin.

MPR Rating: Four Stars.

Limited Edition LAVANILA Passion Fruit Perfume

Just in time for Valentines day comes Lavanila’s newest Healthy Fragrance, Passion Fruit.  I received a rollerball version ($19) of the perfume and love it.

Infused with passion fruit, guava and peach nectar this perfume has a warm base derived from sandalwood and Madagascar vanilla.  Loaded with aphrodisiacs it is a sweeter perfume than I would typically wear but it is one that plays lightly on your skin all day long and it cheers me each time I smell it. I love using a product that has no parabens, sulfates, synthetic perfumes or dyes or contains any mineral oil.

There is an entire Limited Edition Passion Fruit line which features all the classic products from a Healthy Fragrance set including the 2-in-1 wash/shave, body butter, large fragrance and body butter/fragrance set ($60).  The rollerball perfume or any of the Passion Fruit items makes a great Valentines Day gift this year.

Lavanila products can be purchased online, at Sephora, Sephora at JCPenny, QVC and Beauty.com.

L’Occitane Limited Edition Cherry Princess Hand Cream

Perfect for Valentine’s Day and when you want to invoke the upcoming spring grab a tube of L’Occitane’s Limited Edition Cherry Princess hand cream ($10). Part of the Cherry Princess collection, which includes perfume, silky body gel and more.

The 1 ounce tube fits nicely on my dresser top, in a purse or even my car.  It smells divine and the scent lasts for hours.  I have used it for more than a hand cream too.  Some days I apply it to my inner arms and neck to use as a perfume and find that in the evening the fragrance is still there.  It’s fantastic! It’s also pretty to look at as is the entire line.

Read more about the Limited Edition Cherry Princess set here.  It’s getting rave reviews!

Yes to Blueberries & Cucumbers

I haven’t tried a lot of the Yes to Carrots products or other items from this company.  I was excited to try out the Yes to Blueberries Brightening Eye Rollerball ($19.99), Yes to Blueberries Eye Firming Treatment ($19.99) and Yes to Cucumber Soothing Eye Gel ($14.99).  The week I tested all these eye products could not have been more perfect as I was up late all week, woken up by small children multiple times a night.  I look haggard, puffy-eyed and loaded with dark circles each day.

The Yes to Blueberries Brightening Eye Rollerball was by far my favorite.  The results were quick to reveal and I loved applying this cold metal rollerball under my eyes when I woke up each morning.  My eyes felt soothed and relieved right away and within about thirty minutes I looked more awake.  Typically, that doesn’t happen until after I shower.  This product is my new best friend.  (Four Stars)

Yes to Blueberries Eye Firming Treatment received mixed reviews on the trusted website, Make-up Alley, but I liked the product.  I loved that it was in pump form as it keeps things clean and sanitary.  So many eye products come in jars and you get too much product and end up germing up the jar.  Yuck!  I liked that it is paraben free, 99% natural and it can be used morning and night.  My eyes felt refreshed when I used this product and smooth.  Beeswax makes your skin soft while the paracress flower helps to remove fine lines and wrinkles.  I saw a tiny difference over a week and will continue to use it to see if the results are more dramatic.  (Four Stars)

Finally the Yes to Cucumber Soothing Eye Gel.  Again, I like the pump bottle and how my under-eye skin felt calmed.  I have bad allergies and my eyes are affected the most. Many products make the itchiness I feel worse but not this one.  It calmed the area and cooled it. I need that when my peepers feel red, dry and itchy.  However, I found that the product rolled off my skin later.  Why do some eye gels and creams do that?  I was disappointed and it made me not want to use the product again despite loving the calm, soothing feeling. (Three Stars)

Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo

I love dry shampoo. I’m a person with fine hair that gets oily at the roots by the end of the day. I love that I can spray in a dry shampoo and look a little bit better at the gym or on early morning errands. Not all dry shampoos are made up of the same ingredients and not all of them work that well. Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo ($2.87-3.49) has luckily made the cut.

The Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo is different from Suave’s other dry shampoo with its mineral clay base. This one is set to compete with salon brands (like Bumble & Bumble) and is infused with Keralock Technology that enables hair to be smooth and manageable as well as fresh.

I used it a few times last week and like most dry shampoos you shake it and spray it 8-10 inches from your hair. I concentrated on my roots and immediately noticed the fine spray. A cloud of white powder DID NOT envelop me! A pleasant, non-powdery or overly perfumed scent surrounded me and then dissipated. I waited a few moments and there were no clumps of white-ish hair. I combed my hair easily and that was it. It was done and this dry shampoo worked. The oil was absorbed and my hair had a smooth, non-greasy, fresh finish. In fact, I think it worked just as well or better than Bumble & Bumble. The volume increased in my hair and as always it extends the life of a blowout.  Perfect!

I highly recommend checking the Sauve Professionals Keratin Infused Dry Shampoo out. It is affordable, works well on all hair colors and smells great too! There is a whole line of Keratin Infused products, including a 30 Day Smoothing kit, coming out this January and February. I think they are worth a test drive if you ask me.

RazorPit Review

When items such as the RazorPit filter into my inbox I have a tendency to look the other way. It seems gimmicky.  Then I go to my local Target to pick up some razor blades for myself and my husband and I feel like I need to take out a loan.  Hello, people at RazorPit?  I’m ready for my review now.

The RazorPit is a razor blade sharpener.  Plain and simple it works with all razor blades and can increase the use of a single blade up to 150 times.  Using friction technology (that stand has give to it like skin) it removes residue, hair, soap and skin from the blade letting you use the the blade a whole lot more.  I tested it out this weekend after realizing my razor needed to shave my leg three times in one spot to get a clean, close shave.

To use the RazorPit you need only to apply your shave cream, gel or soap to the RazorPit’s flat surface.  Run your razor forwards about 4-5 times.  Rinse both the RazorPit and razor clean and you are done. Pretty simple and fast.  It worked too!  I immediately took my razor and went down the front of my calf.  The whole line was smooth and clean with no need to retrace. I’m ridiculously happy I don’t have to replace my blade again! I ran it through the RazorPit a few more times for good measure. My husband tested his out too and it seems that the more blades you have (Mach 3 Turbo) the less success you might have. His worked out but not as noticeably sharpened as my dual blade.

The RazorPit Razor Blade Sharpener (about $25) is sold online at Amazon (pink, black and white colors available) and the company website.

Sun Ridge Farms Organic & Natural Foods

Powered by 70% solar energy (at peak usage) and located in Pajaro, CA, SunRidge Farms is an all natural, organic snack food company.  Founded in 1982 and a certified green business this is a company that pays its employees if they bike to work.  That’s wonderful! I wish there were more places that operated this way.

But what about the snacks, right?

I tried the Organic Cranberry Harvest mix ($4.65) which has a great combination of dried apples, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, cranberries, giant almonds and even some dark chocolate chips.  It’s a nice mixture that I loved to eat right after I left the gym or was running errands and getting a bit hungry.  I thought there were a bit too many chocolate chips for my taste but then again it is January and I’m trying to eat less sugar.  Overall, I thought the combination of sweet and tangy was great and I would definitely eat it again.

I also had the Thai Curry Cashews and the Dark Chocolate Almonds. Swoon, to both!  The Thai Curry Cashews are a great source of protein that also have no artificial dyes, additives or colors.  Packed with curry seasoning but not overpowering I really enjoyed this different, crunchy snack.  The same goes for the Dark Chocolate Almonds.  A few at a time has become the answer to my mid-afternoon snack attack.  When I want something sweet the dark chocolate is perfect but I still get a bit of protein and sustenance from the almonds.

SunRidge Farms makes a variety of snack mixes, in-house roasted nuts and even confections.  You can purchase them online at their website.

Clairvoyant Perfume by Clairvoyant Beauty

It’s a new year! Why not a new scent?  I’m a huge fan of citrus-based scents. In fact,  my husband actually thought I naturally smelled like Origins ‘Spring Fever’ when we first met. Silly boy.  Beyond that I tend towards perfumes with a peppery scent, like Theorema by Fendi.  I typically wear Hermes “Un Jardin Apres La Mousson” on a daily basis. So I was excited to learn about Clairvoyant Beauty and its new scent, “Clairvoyant“.

Created by Lexie Masterson (yes, she’s related to actress Mary Stuart Masterson) Clairvoyant is deliciously crisp, floral fragrance that has a hint of citrus to it.   Like the products in the luxury Clairvoyant Beauty line the perfume is hand-crafted using natural and organic ingredients.  Produced in small batches it is an all-natural fragrance that can be worn alone or to enhance ones own fragrance.  I love that! When I put it on it is light and a bit sweet but if I add to it and layer it with my citrus lotion the scent changes and becomes deeper.  It’s a small thing but perfume is so rarely versatile in this way and this unique quality sets Clairvoyant apart.

I also love that each small batch contains base notes of Tabacco Absolue, Green Cognac with top notes that include Mexican lime and bergamot. All things I look for in a fragrance.  It’s light but the more you add the more the scent changes and continues to bring out its layers.  The 100% natural formula is pure fragrance too. No unnecessary chemicals here, even the alcohol is made from organic corn alcohol.

Clairvoyant perfume ($45-100, sizes vary) and other Clairvoyant beauty products are available online and at some salons and boutiques.

Mini Kittour by Vonda Just in Case Collection

If you travel a lot then the mini kittour Just in Case individuals and refillables are something you are going to love.  I really could have used this collection when I was traveling so much in the last few years.  While you can pick up a pill case or travel-sized bottles at many drugstores you won’t find such a high-quality set like the pieces from mini kittour.

In beautiful chocolate brown and accented with gold each item holds up well and is the right size for air travel.  They are leak-proof, refillable and customizable.  That last one is one of the best parts to this set.  The recyclable, flexible set of bottles ($6-7), sprayers, vitamin case, jars with screw on caps, and 3 piece dual-ended makeup brushes ($35) comes with a memo pad with 80 waterproof labels and a mini-sharpie ($10) to label each one.  I love it!  You can put your conditioner, shampoo, eye cream, lotions and even makeup remover in these bottles without fear of them breaking and leaking all over your other luggage.  I also love that the four well Vitamin case ($5) is square and flat instead of a bulky rectangle.  You can also get a set of 3 of the clear PET bottles (like the sprayer or lotion pump) for $8.

I also happen to like the mini kittour Daily Kit ($50) for storing things like makeup and brushes inside my gym bag, diaper bag and car.  I don’t have to worry about powers smudging, lip gloss stains or any of those yucky accidents when I carry this.  The outside wipes clean and has a large mirror that many of these cases just don’t have. The three brushes inside are super soft and luxurious.  They are long lasting and won’t scratch your skin like many cheaper versions do.  In addition to holding two bottles and jars you can add other makeup, a cell phone or even your credit cards.  The outside is nice enough to carry as a clutch too.  It’s so perfect!

Created by Vonda Simon a mother, lover of beauty and fashion and business mogul, mini kittour is based on aesthetics, function, portability and convenience.  You can purchase mini kittour items, there are larger cases and so much more, online and stores like Beauty Bar.
